MagPress: Configure Your Widgets

To access the Widget page, go to Appearance → Widgets

On the right, you will see a number of panels that you can expand:

  • Slider
  • Home Page
  • Shop Sidebar (eCommerce only)
  • Sidebar
  • Footer

Each widget area specific to your theme has been color coded to make setup easy. Simply drag the widgets you need into the corresponding panels. For new WordPress installs, you may need to drag out any default widgets.

At the top of the page you will find a yellow ribbon containing a handy “Click Here” link, which will display the recommended widget setup in case you get lost.

Below is an explanation of each widget and how to configure it.

Slider

The Home Page Widget area is specially formatted for the Slider widget. Drag the blue (Obox) slider into this panel, then expand it to access the widget options.

(Obox) Slider

The Slider is a category driven widget, designed to be located at the top of your home page, and is recommended to either display slider posts or latest videos from a specific category.

  1. eCommerce: Select a Post Type and click Save
  2. eCommerce: Select a Filter Type and click Save
  3. Select a Post Category or Filter and click Save
  4. Select the number of slides from the Post Count menu
  5. Select how you would like to order the slides (By Date is default)
  6. Select whether to show Post Thumbnails or Videos in the Thumbnails menu (not available in eCommerce slider)
    • When your content contains a mixture of oEmbed videos, posts with featured images and normal video posts, choose Post Feature Image. Videos will appear automatically if no image is found in the post.
    • oEmbed posts will show a thumbnail automatically if you choose Post Feature Image.
  7. Set an auto-slide interval or enter 0 for no auto-slide.
    • If you enter an auto-slide interval, the slider arrows will be hidden
  8. Click Save

Home Page Panel

This panel accomodates any full-width or orange (Obox) home page widgets.

(Obox) Three Column

This widget will display your videos or post thumbnails in a 3-column style.

  1. Enter a Title, or enter a blank space for no title. The title will link to the chosen category.
  2. Enter a Custom Title link if you would like the title to link to a page or category
  3.  Select a Post Type and click Save
  4. Select a Filter Type and click Save
  5. Select a Post Category or Filter and click Save
  6. Select the number of post to show (use a multiple of the columns you selected)
  7. Select how you would like to order the posts (By Date is default)
  8. Select whether to show Post Thumbnails or Videos in the Thumbnails menu (not available in eCommerce widget)
    • When your content contains a mixture of oEmbed videos, posts with featured images and normal video posts, choose Post Feature Image. Videos will appear automatically if no image is found in the post.
    • oEmbed posts will show a thumbnail automatically if you choose Post Feature Image.
  9. Check Show Images / Video to display the thumbnails
  10. Check Show Dates to show published dates for posts in this widget (excluded for Products)
  11. Toggle Show Excerpts to show part of your post content. The default is either the content of your post’s Excerpt field or the first 55 words, or you can enter a custom Excerpt Length (in characters)
  12. (eCommerce) Check Show Buy Now Button if you want to show the button, else just the title, price and description are shown.
  13. Click Save

(Obox) Side By Side Categories

This widget  displays a list of posts or mini blog feed from two different categories or post types in two columns.

  1. Enter a Title for Column 1
  2. Select a Post Type and click Save
  3. Select a Filter Type and click Save
  4. Select a Post Category or Filter and click Save
  5. Enter the number of posts you would like to display in the Post Count menu.
  6. Check Show Images to enable images or videos to appear.
  7. Check Show Excerpts to enable a snippet of your post content
  8. Check Show Date to show the post date (excluded for Products)
  9. (eCommerce) Check Show Buy Now Button if you want to show the button, else just the title, price and description are shown.
  10. Click Save
  11. Repeat for Column 2

Thumbnails are generated automatically if you are using oEmbed links, otherwise the post featured image will appear. Due to the tiny thumbnail size, the video player will not be shown.

(Obox) Single Column

Displays your posts in a single column with thumbnails on the right. Similar to the Blog List with a different format. (Used for the Technology category on our Theme Demo)

  1. Enter a Title
  2. Enter a Custom Title link if you would like the title to link to a page or category
  3. Select a Post Type and click Save
  4.  Select a Filter Type and click Save
  5. Select a Post Category or Filter and click Save
  6. Enter the number of posts you would like to display in the Post Count menu.
  7. Select a custom sort order if desired. Posts order by date by default.
  8. Select whether to show Post Thumbnails or Videos in the Thumbnails menu. (not available in eCommerce widget)

(Obox) Blog List

This widget displays a selected number of posts from the selected category in a regular blog-style layout with images on the left. Use this widget instead of the Blog Style homepage when you want to add other widgets to the mix other than the slider.

  1. Enter a Title
  2. Enter a Custom Title link if you would like the title to link to a page or category
  3. Select a Post Type and click Save
  4.  Select a Filter Type and click Save
  5. Select a Post Category or Filter and click Save
  6. Enter the number of posts you would like to display in the Post Count menu.
  7. Select a custom sort order if desired. Posts order by date by default.
  8. Select whether to show Post Thumbnails or Videos in the Thumbnails menu. (not available in eCommerce widget)

This widget is coded to display a specific number of posts, and will not paginate. If you want paginated posts on your homepage, use the Blog Style homepage and place any other full-width widgets you want to use into the Slider panel.

 (Obox) Latest Gallery

Displays latest thumbnails from the selected gallery category, or the latest images from all categories. To manipulate the order your images appear, edit your gallery and drag and drop the images.

  1. Enter a Title
  2. Select a number of thumbs to show
  3. Select a specific gallery or leave All Images selected
  4. Click Save

 

Shop Sidebar (MagPress eCommerce only)

This panel accepts any single-column (purple) Obox widgets, standard WordPress widgets (gray) or green WooCommerce widgets. For details on WooCommerce Widgets, visit the WooCommerce Documentation.

If you choose to use the WooCommerce Product Search widget, it must be placed in the bottom position (last)

Sidebar & Footer

The sidebar accepts any single-column Obox (purple) widgets  or standard WordPress (gray) widgets. For MagPress eCommerce, you may also place green WooCommerce widgets here. Note that widgets placed in the Sidebar will also appear on the Homepage. Widgets placed in the Footer are visible on all posts and pages.

(Obox) Twitter Stream

Display a simple feed of your latest Tweets.

  1. Enter a Title such as “Follow Me on Twitter”. This title will link to your profile.
  2. Enter your Twitter ID without the @
  3.  Click the link to go to your Twitter Profile widget page
    • Click Create New, then Create Widget.
    • Copy the numeric ID from the address bar URL and paste it in the Widget Code field

  4. Select the number of Tweets to show.
  5. Select whether to display Replies/ Retweets
  6. Select a default color scheme. When used in the sidebar or any dark background, choose Dark.
  7. Enter a custom color for the links using an HTML color code (gray by default)
  8. Enter a widget height to adjust the container height if showing more than 3 tweets.
  9. Click Save

 

(Obox) Comments

Display the latest comments with a short excerpt and link to the post. This differs from the default WordPress widget in how it displays the information.

(Obox) Popular Posts

Display a list of links to your most popular posts based on the number of comments they have received. This widget draws from regular Posts only.

(Obox) Social Links

Displays icons linking to your social profiles. Enter the full URLs to your social profiles here.  For the email field, enter your email address. For RSS, enter your RSS Feed Url or Feedburner URL.

(Obox) Search

Provides a styled search field.

(Obox) 125 x 125 Adverts

Displays any small adverts added using the Advert Manager

(Obox) 300px Adverts

Displays any large adverts added using the Advert Manager

(Obox) Sidebar Thumbnails

Displays featured images or videos from the selected post category in a sidebar-sized slider
